The building, called the Signal Tower, is expected to be completed in 2015 and will be around 300 meters (985 feet) tall. It will stand in the La Defense business district. The rectangular tower will be divided into four stacked levels to house stores, a luxury hotel, offices and apartments on the top – crowned with green from the atrium. The skyscraper, totaling 140,000 square meters (about 459,000 square feet), features straight lines and 90-degree angles. "The Signal Tower is the most important architectural expression since the Eiffel Tower, and it is this creativity that the jury wanted," said Patrick Devedjian, who heads EPAD, the body that administers the business district. The skyscraper will be 23 meters (75 feet) shorter than the Eiffel Tower, making it the second-tallest building in the Paris metropolitan area. The new skyscraper is part of a broader project to renew the business district. President Nicolas Sarkozy counts business development as one of his top priorities, hoping to make France more competitive in the global market. The Signal Tower will be built near the business district's reigning landmark, the Grande Arche, which is lined up with the Arc de Triomphe at the top of Champs-Elysees Avenue and the obelisk at Place de la Concorde. It was not immediately clear when the building project would begin. Nouvel, 62, won the 2008 Pritzker prize, considered the world's top architecture award. Nouvel's design beat out proposals by four other architects, Britain's Norman Foster, American Daniel Libeskind and two other Frenchmen, Jean-Michel Wilmotte and Jacques Ferrier. His previous works include the Institute of the Arab World in Paris, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and Paris' Quai Branly museum for the primitive arts. |
