“Prefabrication is stronger abroad, but in the Philippines, people still prefer to choose their own ideas and style,” said Edward Diamonon, Worldbex Services Inc. (WSI) vice president. Prefabrication is the practice of manufacturing the components of an assembly in one location and assembling them in another. In the country’s real estate industry, Diamonon said the upper middle class’ preference in architectural designs include Mediterranean and Hispanic influences, mixed with their own “individualistic and artistic design.” However, he foresees prefabrication housing to soon pave its way in the mainstream market due to its affordability and since it cuts down construction time. In addition, Diamonon said fabricated materials are now being used in building commercial infrastructure. An example in Cebu, is the Cebu International Convention Center since architect Manuel Guanzon said the structural steel for the building were fabricated items while the walls were prefabricated. Meanwhile, like other local industry players, Diamo-non said the local construction sector, in particular, is showing signs of upbeat developments vis a vis the growth in Cebu’s real estate industry, and commercial infrastructure. Unlike in the last five years, the province has become a melting pot for business and leisure, evident by the construction of high-story buildings and developments in the housing sector both in the southern and northern part. “Cebuanos now understand the need to invest in quality housing as a basic necessity, especially the OFW (overseas Filipino workers) market,” Diamonon told Sun.Star Cebu during yesterday’s opening of the 5th Philippine Building and Construction Exposition (Philbex) at the parking lot of Ayala Center Cebu. Regional planners believe the construction industry will remain upbeat this year. Aside from OFWs, the Central Visayas Regional Economic Situationer identified other factors for the construction boom in the region—expansion of information technology, tourism and retail trade industries and lower interest rates for borrowing. Strategic “Cebu will be hosting (again) Philbex—its fifth in a row—because we see Cebu as a strategic venue for establishing new markets and generating more sales. It continues to be recognized for its track record of progress and growth,” WSI founding chairman Joseph Ang said in a statement. According to Diamonon, the exhibit aims to elevate and empower the Philippine construction industry and provide a venue for business-matching opportunities. One of the highlights will be a free seminar by a distinguished pool of architects to introduce today’s trends and ideas for construction. Exhibitors WSI, the organizer of the exhibit gathered 158 local and exhibitors from Ireland, USA, Singapore, Italy, Korea, China, among others, engaged in the distribution of building materials, interior design and renovation, security and fire equipment, construction promotion, information technology and telecommunications as well government and private institutions. Philbex, the local version of Worldbex, is expected to gather architects, interior designers, engineers, distributors, importers and exporters, project managers, purchasing managers and other decision makers.
