Tesda, Holcim search for outstanding masons
Monday, 09 June 2008 13:29

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The search is on for the most skilled and outstanding masons in Central Luzon.

Teri Cruz, manager for social responsibility of Holcim Philippines Inc., announced this during the recently conducted regional roadshow in the City of San Fernando.

Dubbed Galing Mason award, the annual search is sponsored by Holcim Phil., in partnership with Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda), Association of Construction and Informal Workers (Aciw), and Philippine Construction Association (PCA).

Cruz said the search aims to showcase the skills of masons, enhance and promote their image and for them to serve as role models to other masons not only in the region but also in the entire country.

Tesda deputy director general Rogelio Peyuan said the search aims to honor and give due recognition to the works and efforts of masons, one of the big sectors in the construction industry.

He encouraged masons to perform their work professionally and to become effective and efficient partners in the development of the country.

Masons are one of the priority manpower requirements of countries like Dubai and Canada, PeYUan said, adding that the development of skilled and qualified mason workers is one of the strategies to lessen the number of unemployed in the country.

Nominees to the search must be Filipino citizen, either male or female, at least 25 years old and holder of a valid Tesda skills certificate on masonry or civil works trade.

The nominee must also be of good moral character as certified by two local associations and a practicing mason at the time of nomination.

Cruz said that duly registered organization such as company, civic and professional organizations, community associations, non-government organizations (NGOs), people's organizations, and local government units (LGUs) may nominate qualified masons to the said search.

Entries to the search may be submitted to the nearest Tesda office from June 1 to October 15,2008.

Screening and selection committees at the provincial, regional and levels shall be responsible in assessing the nominees based on their outstanding accomplishments, income and social index, demonstration of skills and work values.
