SM Prime Holdings president Hans Sy said his family had started construction of a third mall located in Chengdu, China and was looking for another site for a fourth mall to be constructed next year. Sy said the third mall in China had retail giant Wal-mart and Laiya, a leading supermarket operator in Thailand, as anchor tenants. “We plan to open a store per year in China,” Sy told reporters. Sy said the family planned to open shopping malls in the provinces of China and not on major cities because of stiff competition in urban areas. Sy said the same strategy was being employed by Wal-Mart in China. Wal-Mart operates over 40 stores in China. The Sy family opened its first shopping mall in Crossroad West in Xiamen two years ago and a second mall on a 170,000-square-meter property in Jin Jiang City in Fujian province last year. The family’s malls in China carry the SM trademark. Meanwhile, Sy said the family was studying the possibility of folding its China ventures into SMPH, the shopping mall operator and developer of SM Investment Corp., the holding company of Sy family.
