PNRC to build 1,050 housing units for typhoon victims in Iloilo
Saturday, 16 August 2008 00:00

The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) Iloilo Chapter will put up 1,050 housing units for victims of typhoon Frank in Iloilo.

PNRC Iloilo Chairman Ramon Cua-Locsin said with the support of the International Red Cross, they hope to commence with the construction of the units next month or within the next two months.

He added the houses will be made of light materials although imported galvanized iron sheets will be utilized for the roofing.

"The project will give initial relief to those who could not really afford to build new houses. We will prioritize those who used to reside in disaster-affected areas and danger zones," Cua-Locsin said.

At present, 991 beneficiaries were already identified with the help of local government units where the houses will be constructed.

The highest number of units will be constructed in Carles town with 150; Pavia, 141; Sta. Barbara, 117; Alimodian, 114; Balasan, 83; Janiuay, 68; Concepción, 57; Cabatuan, 45; Ajuy and Lemery, 34 units each; and San Enrique, 30.

Housing units will also be established in Batad with 29; Sara, 25; Barotac Viejo, 21; San Rafael, 20; San Dionisio, 17; and Oto six units.

The beneficiaries of the remaining 59 units are yet to be identified.

Cua-Locsin added they have set a condition that the beneficiaries shall not return to their former settlement.

He also stressed that the houses will be built in relocation areas which will be provided by the LGU while beneficiaries are expected to provide sweat equity. (PNA)
